National championship double for College athletes

Winning performances have seen two Loughborough College students named champions in a field of almost 2000 athletes from across England.

Amy Griffiths and Matthew Shirling both triumphed to secure individual titles at Leicestershire’s Donington Park in the English Schools Cross Country Championships.

Amy, who is studying for a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport at Loughborough College, took first place in the Senior Girls 4.4km race by six seconds from runner up Lydia Turner.

The 17 year old, who is also a member of the College’s UK Athletics AASE programme, scooped a women’s team gold for Britain in the European Athletics Cross Country Championships in Serbia in December.

Matthew Shirling, also on the Loughborough College AASE programme, retained his 2013 Senior Boys title with a clear, five second victory over Greater Manchester’s Zak Miller.

“I felt very good,” he said afterwards. “My confidence is very high.”
