Love Art set to showcase Loughborough College creative talent

Loughborough College is set to highlight students’ creative talent at the forthcoming Love Art!

The exhibition will showcase around 100 pieces of work from painting to printing and photography, sculpture to sketchbooks, all produced by visual arts students.

Amongst those exhibiting will be Kamile Jokubaviciute, 18. “We have spent hours on our work and it’s a great opportunity for us to share that as well as to see the work of our fellow students.

“I am in my second year with Loughborough College and I am loving it. It’s giving me the chance to explore so many different styles and media. I enjoy creating landscapes but on my art and design course I am developing skills which mean I can not only do that through fine art but also by using digital platforms, photography or sculpture.”

Nafiz Ahmed, 20, agrees: “It will be nice to show my work to a wider audience. My particular interest is in portraiture but my course has encouraged me to experiment with a range of ideas and techniques. It’s helped me become much more confident. My aim is to study architecture at University.”

Loughborough College art lecturer Tony Cheetham added: “The whole purpose of art is to be viewed and this is a great opportunity for the college to see the imagination and creativity of some of its students.”

Love Art! will run in the Hub from 13-15 February in the Hub

Loughborough College rugby players help England women defeat Army

Loughborough College rugby players helped England Women run in five tries to defeat Army Women 35-5.

Head coach Jo Yapp selected Bryony Field, Ellen Ramsbottom, Anya Richmond and Amelia Harper for the squad, with fellow College student Jodie Mallard as non-playing reserve, to face the Army at the Army Rugby Stadium in Aldershot at the weekend.

Bryony, Ellen, Anya and Amelia were all amongst the starting XV with Ellen, Bryony and Anya all wearing the England shirt for the first time. A try from Amelia in the first half helped England secure their win.

The five Loughborough College players, who are also part of Women’s Premiership side Loughborough Lightning, joined a four-day training camp with England in January ahead of being named for the squad.

Anya said: “After the trial camp in January I was excited to hear about selection. We had to wait four weeks for the team to come out and during that time we had a couple more Premiership games to try and prove ourselves. For that month I felt motivated to do well and keep fit for selection. But as the days passed, I started to get really nervous and just wanted to know if I had been selected.

“After the game against Army Women, I felt so overwhelmed from what I had achieved and all the support I had watching me. I felt very proud of myself and also my Loughborough teammates around me. The game for me was the best opportunity I have had and it has made me excited for more in the future”.

England Women U20 will now look ahead to home and away fixtures against France Women U20 in March.

Double celebration as Loughborough College chef is awarded prestigious national culinary prize on 18th birthday

It was a double celebration for Loughborough College chef Kieron Rudolph when he was awarded a prestigious national culinary prize – on his 18th birthday.

Kieron Rudolph lined up against seven other winners from across the country at the finals of the 2019 Aspiring Chef competition at the Teflon DSA Awards before scooping a prize scholarship worth £36,000.

Loughborough College students have now secured a coveted place in the Aspiring Chef finals for four years in a row, with former students James Ganderton and Mary Harper each named overall winners.

The three year Specialised Chefs Scholarship awarded to Kieron is arranged by the world renowned Royal Academy of Culinary Arts and offers the chance to train in some of the UK’s top hotels and restaurants, including Claridge’s, The Ritz and The House of Commons.

“I am ecstatic. It is such an incredible opportunity,” said Kieron, who had to put thoughts of his milestone birthday on one side to focus on a day of challenges under the watchful eye of a team of expert judges.

“I was very nervous for the first challenge of the day, which opened with a demo and then us having to fillet and pan serve a mackerel. I came out of it knowing it was not my best work but it made me absolutely determined to do better.”

Kieron went on to excel in both sensory and skills challenges and the creation of his Venison main course with parsley puree, wild mushroom fricassee, a duo of bone marrow dumpling and roasted bone marrow and a shallot and red wine jus.

Following the announcement of his prize, Loughborough College chef lecturer and hospitality and catering lead Darren Creed presented Kieron with a row of cupcakes, complete with candles.

“It’s certainly an 18th birthday I will never forget. I was disappointed not to win but was told it had been incredibly close and I was thrilled to achieve runner up and to be awarded the scholarship.

“I feel as if a dream has come true and I am determined to do well for the rest of the year before I head off to take it up. I can’t thank Loughborough College enough, they’ve taught me so much. I was really quiet and scared when I started but as my course has gone on and I’ve been entered for competitions I’ve really grown in confidence.

“I am sad to be leaving the College and nervous about moving away from home to take up the scholarship but also very excited. I know it will open amazing doors. Who knows where I’ll be in three years’ time?”

Impressive creation earns Loughborough College hairdressing student spot in national finals

An outstanding performance from Loughborough College student Hollie Guest has earned her a coveted spot at the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists 2019 national final.

Hollie will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of former Loughborough College student Emma Sessions who took the 2018 national ‘Fantasy’ title and has gone on to work for US television.

Alongside fellow College students Esme Williams, Claudette Beal and Tiffany Penney, Hollie went head to head with young stylists from across the region for a chance to reach the UK showdown and it was Hollie’s impressive Snow Queen ‘Fantasy’ which will see her join winners from across the country at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool in March.

“The Level 3 advanced diploma in Hairdressing is a demanding course, plus Hollie has a job, nevertheless she put in an enormous amount of extra time to develop her design - and it certainly paid off,” said Loughborough College hairdressing lead Karen Dixon.

“Hollie’s Snow Queen wowed the judges - and she was absolutely made up to go through. We are very proud of her and of all our students who competed. Now there will be even more hard work to refine and enhance the design, ready for the national final.”
