Loughborough College athletes competing for England produced a GB record to add to a string of wins and top scores in Austria recently.
It was three in a row for Loughborough College student Adam Hague as he extended the British Junior Pole Vault record to 5.55m at the Vienna Indoor Classic.
The 17 year old, who studies on the British Athletics AASE programme with Loughborough College, broke the World Youth Indoor Record in December with a jump of 5.46 before last month adding 5cms to his British junior record with a clearance of 5.51 at the Northern Championships – and finishing the month by bettering it in the Austria competition.
Fellow Loughborough College student Thomas Somers, also 17, led the field home in 21.17 for a season’s best in the 200m.
Tom, who is aiming to make the Rio Olympics in 2016, ran the 200m at the 2014 World Junior Championships in the US last year in 20.37 – with only Usain Bolt the only person to ever run faster at that distance at that age.
Loughborough College Elite Sport tutor Nicholas Gayle, ran a season's best of 7.85 in heat one of the 60m hurdles. The time qualified him for the finals later in the day, where he again lowered his SB to 7.82.
“Training has gone really well for me this winter and that combined with my time in Vienna means I will go into the GB Championships on 14 February with real confidence.
“The challenge is to be GB number one.”
