An exciting opportunity for young people to join the country’s first ever Sport Studio School is being developed by Loughborough College.
Following a 31-medal haul in this summer’s Commonwealth Games and a double Outstanding for Sport from education watchdog OFSTED, Loughborough College aims to build on its success by leading in the launch of a pioneering sport-specific school for 14 to 19 year olds.
The Loughborough Studio School for Sport would offer a ground-breaking, high-quality sport and education package for young sportspeople keen to maximise their potential in team or individual sport or who are focused on a career in sport, leisure or the fitness industry - perhaps as a professional sports coach or PE teacher.
Expert coaching, competition and work experience will be combined with a curriculum including GCSEs, A levels and vocational Sport qualifications to give students the skills to help them fulfil their sporting and career ambitions.
Loughborough College Chief Executive Esme Winch said: “There are established Studio Schools across the UK but this would be the first ever to specialise in only sport and is in direct response to demand from national professional sporting bodies.
“With no more than 300 students, Loughborough Studio School of Sport aims to offer 14 to 19 year olds an exciting and personalised approach to their education.
“The proposed Studio School would provide students with the opportunity to take their sporting performance to the next level with training from highly qualified Sports Coaches and in competition as well as to enhance their career and further study prospects with an excellent academic curriculum and the chance for work placement.
“The Loughborough Studio School for Sport plans to enable young people to reach their maximum sporting potential whilst not sacrificing their educational attainment or progression.
“We are very keen to hear people’s views as this exciting opportunity for Loughborough and the region takes shape.”
If the Studio School is approved it will open in September 2016 and has already backed by national governing bodies and professional sports clubs including Rugby Football League, the Motor Sport Association, Volleyball England, the International Futsall Academy and the Leicester Riders.
