A strong Great Britain and Northern Ireland junior team including six Loughborough College names is set to compete in the season’s first major track and field meeting this weekend.
The Loughborough International Athletics Match on Sunday 18 May will see current sport students Thomas Somers, Ojie Edoburun, both 17, and Adam Hague, 16 joined by former students Freddie Curtis, 19, Yasmin Miller, 18 and Loren Bleaken, 18.
Thomas, who achieved a personal best of 20.84 to finish fourth in the 200m at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Donetsk last summer and holds an age best over the same distance, will be competing over 200m. Fellow AASE students Ojie, a 100m World Youth Championships silver medalist, and Adam will compete in the 100m and pole vault respectively.
Freddie Curtis (pictured), who studied BTEC and AASE programmes at Loughborough College, will be seen in javelin.
Many of the athletes taking part will be targeting a place on the GB and NI team for the IAAF World Junior Championships in Oregon this summer.
Loughborough College Elite Sport Team Leader Matt O’Dowd said: “The Loughborough International is a key opportunity for athletes to show how well they have wintered and how well their transition in to summer training has progressed.
“It is a great start to the year for these Loughborough College names to be selected for the GB U20 team in what is a crucial year with the World Juniors in Eugene in July as the primary target.
“With selection for the championships being early in the summer season, this weekend is an important stepping stone to making the team.”
