It was 100% success when Loughborough College’s tennis and volleyball teams both secured a win in the 2014 British Colleges Sport National Finals.
“The best College teams in the country competed. We were defending champions in tennis and after volleyball qualified for nationals last year and couldn’t get there due to other commitments they certainly made their presence felt this time round,” said Rob Jarram, Elite Sport Development &
School Sport Apprenticeship Programme Lead.
“Our players were outstanding with Amelia Coltman and Ryan Parmar beating every other pair in the tennis tournament to win gold for the second year and volleyball securing a comfortable two sets to nil victory against the West Midlands in the final.
“There is certainly more room for growth next year for Loughborough College with plans for us to have more sports represented in the competition – and hopefully even more success.”
Extended Diploma in Sport and AASE student Amelia Coltman turned 18 in the middle of the competition in Bath at the weekend and says winning gold for a second time was a great birthday present. “There was extra pressure because we were defending our title for the College – and for the East Midlands.
“We played six matches and it was tough at times but we held our nerve and won 6-4 to secure gold on Sunday, which was also my 18th birthday. That was a great feeling.”
Amelia plans to study for a BSc in Sports Science at Sheffield Hallam while Ryan Parmar is aiming for Leeds Metropolitan and a degree in Sport Business Management.
“I hope to play premier division University tennis,” added Ryan, 17. “It has been fantastic at Loughborough College. They have been so supportive helping us combine our training and competitions with our academic courses so we could achieve highly with everything.
“Amelia and I really wanted to win again at the weekend and the standard was even better than last year so it was brilliant to get gold.
“We got a trophy between us last year and again this year – but I want Amelia to keep the new one.”
The Loughborough College winning team volleyball players were: Leon Davis-Chamber, Alex Hutchinson, Ben Tomlinson, George Wainwright, Rob Bellamy,
Matt White, Richard James and Ryan Davis.
