Loughborough College students set to take centre stage for music launch

Young people will get the chance to sing, play and produce music at a brand new Friday night event being led by Loughborough College students.

As they look forward to the opening of a new Visual and Performance Arts Centre this summer, part of a £15 million development at the College, the students have been preparing for the series of workshops kicking off at Sorrel Youth Café in Mountsorrel this week.

Playing in a band with vocals, guitar, keys, drums and bass, rapping, lyric writing, Hip Hop and Grime production and the techniques of rock music with guitar, bass and drums will all be on offer on Friday nights for six weeks with the College’s second year BTEC Music students.

“If all you do is make music in your bedroom this is a great opportunity to meet and play with other musicians,” said Loughborough College Music Lecturer Matt Toole.

“Our students are really excited by the chance to share their passion for music with local people and hopefully to inspire them. And it helps them see that a career in music doesn’t only have to be about becoming a rock star or a music producer, you can do something that is of real benefit to the community.”

Youth Officer Graham Lloyd added: “Our partnership with Loughborough College means we can offer expertise and access to equipment we couldn’t afford to do on our own. It’s a great relationship.

“There will be no pressure for anyone to attend regularly but for those who are interested in having a go we want to work with them to develop their talent through the programme, including open mic sessions, organizing a local music event and so on.”

Any young person over the age of 14 can sign up for one or as many sessions as they like but with places limited to eight each week it will be on a first come first served basis.

To find out more about the workshops contact Graham on 07775 616001 or 0116 237 5289 or email glloyd@sycafe.org
